Traditional mortar and pestle for everyday cooking
The Suribachi (擂鉢) is a traditional Japanese mortar with a characteristically grooved interior. Ingredients are not just crushed in it, but finely grated and ground through a circular motion with a matching pestle.
With a diameter of 18.5 cm, this Suribachi offers sufficient working space for regular use while remaining comfortably manageable. It is particularly suitable for sesame seeds, spices, herbs, nuts, and pastes.
Freshly ground sesame seeds in particular release their intense aroma in the Suribachi and can be processed from coarsely crushed to a fine paste depending on the duration of grinding.
Tokoname-yaki – Ceramics from Japan
The mortar is produced as Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼). Tokoname is one of Japan's traditional pottery towns and has been known for its ceramics production for centuries.
A special feature of this Suribachi is the treated grinding surface: the characteristic grooves are glazed, which makes it easier to remove residue after use.
With a weight of approximately 800 g, the mortar remains stable on the work surface while grinding without being unnecessarily heavy or cumbersome. It is delivered without a pestle; please order separately.
