Okiagari “Princess Kaguyahime” – The Moonlight Princess
A touch of legend and elegance
Immerse yourself in the world of Japanese fairy tales with our okiagari "Princess Kaguyahime." Inspired by the famous 10th-century tale "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," Kaguyahime—the luminous princess—embodies beauty, mysticism, and the longing for the unattainable.
Kaguyahime – The Princess of the Moon
According to legend, an elderly couple one day found a beautiful baby inside a bamboo trunk. The girl, named Kaguyahime, grew into a woman of incomparable beauty. Despite many suitors, she rejected them all, for her destiny was to return to her true home: the realm of the moon. This story makes Kaguyahime a symbol of purity, transience, and spiritual beauty.
The tradition of Okiagari dolls
Okiagari-koboshi, literally "little monk who rises again," have been an integral part of Japanese culture since the 14th century. These handcrafted papier-mâché dolls always rise again, no matter how many times they are knocked over. They represent perseverance, optimism, and the strength to never give up.
Symbolism and customs
Okiagaris are closely linked to the saying "Fall seven times, get up eight." In Japan, it's traditional to give each family member plus one additional person an okiagari doll as a sign of hope that the family will grow in the coming year. At the Tokaichi Market, they are intentionally thrown to the ground: the dolls that remain standing are considered lucky charms.
