Genmaicha: the nutty-tart green tea with little caffeine
150g
Do you remember your first cup of green tea? For many it was a cup Genmaicha , a fascinating blend of Sencha and roasted brown rice , often served in sushi restaurants. Genmaicha combines the nutty aroma of roasted rice grains with the fresh, tart taste of Sencha tea leaves. A light, uncomplicated taste that is often the first step on many people's tea journey. An additional advantage is its relatively low caffeine content , which is only half that of traditional Sencha.
Our Genmai is particularly digestible compared to other manufacturers. It is not uncommon for inferior Sencha to be added to the Genmai blend - but not with us! The Sencha from the Shimane province is known for its tart, fresh taste, which balances out the sweet taste of rice, and the gentle roasting brings out the warm aroma of the rice grains.
It is said that Genmaicha was invented by Japanese farmers . In years of poor harvests, they made a virtue out of necessity and mixed the valuable Sencha with roasted rice grains. In this way, they were able to stretch their tea supplies until the next harvest and at the same time increase the nutritional value of the drink - essential in times of hunger. Today, fortunately, we can choose this tea because we like it.
Genmaicha is not only a traditional accompaniment to Japanese food ; it also harmonizes wonderfully with Cakes, cookies and desserts . Its nutty, bitter aroma balances the sweetness of the food without dominating it. Thanks to its low caffeine content, Genmaicha can be enjoyed at any time of day - ideal for adults, children, the elderly or pregnant women . It is also easy to prepare: pour boiling water over it, wait 30 seconds, and you're done!
Preparation (our recommendation)
- 300 ml water, 100 degrees
- 5-7g (3 tsp) tea
- 30 seconds brewing time
Tea is a very personal thing. Here is our suggestion for preparation, but feel free to experiment with different amounts and temperatures.
