Okiagari koboshimeans "little monk who gets up again." These lovingly crafted papier-mâché figures are weighted so that they always stand up again after tipping over – a powerful symbol forPerseverance, courage and resilience.
A living tradition since the 14th century
In Japan, Okiagari are an integral part ofTokaichi Market: There, they are dropped to the ground – the standing ones are considered lucky charms. Traditionally, they are given to each family member – plus one more, "for the family's growth in the new year."
